Mercedes-Benz, the recognized leader in automotive safety innovation and luxury vehicles, has announced the launch of a U.S.-based driver safety program designed specifically for teen drivers. The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy will open in late 2011 in Los Angeles after successfully launching the same program in the United Kingdom in 2009. According to the Mercedes-Benz press release, this program will bring a structured program called Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL). This program combines interactive classroom sessions, online learning program, and targeted behind the wheel techniques.

Existing Teen Driving Requirements Lacking Throughout The U.S.

Student driver education programs and requirements vary from state to state and lack many fundamental principles. Changes in modern vehicle design, added distractions including mobile phones, text messaging, etc. demand modernizing training curriculums nationally. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, have recently passed laws increasing hours behind the wheel by 15 additional hours. This additional time will focus on night time and inclement driving procedures. Although this is a solid step, legislators may not be the best to set these standards.

Mercedes-Benz met with Department of Motor Vehicle representatives to verify that programs meet and exceed state requirements. This will be the first automobile manufacturer that has taken the initiative to create a state certified driving school program in the U.S. They are also looking to coordinate with advocacy groups and law enforcement agencies in a public service outreach program designed to increase awareness. We are currently in the middle of the National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 16 – 22) which brings these advocacy groups and law enforcement agencies together. However, this message is only focused one week of each year and is poorly coordinated.

With Mercedes-Benz pioneering many safety features now standard in the automobile industry such as crumple zones, traction control, and ABS braking technology, it comes as no surprise that they again look to lead the way. We at TriStar Security applaud Mercedes-Benz for its innovative approach to driving education and encourage parents to consider this program for their teen drivers. It is our hope that Mercedes-Benz will continue to pursue this as a coordinated national program to help lower accident statistics in the 16 – 19 year age group.
